				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h3><strong>RESEARCH ASSOCIATE (Aboriginal Community-Based Education Program for Labrador)</strong></h3>
<p>DUTIES<br />
Reporting to the Director, Labrador Institute, and the Dean, Faculty of Education, the successful applicant will be responsible for research and related support to the Faculty of Education leading the development of a dynamic Community-Based Education (B.Ed.) program based in Labrador for students of Aboriginal descent.<br />
Working with the Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programs) and faculty members within the Faculty of Education, the Research Associate will develop a program of studies appropriate to the new community-based teacher education program. The successful applicant will conduct research that will provide key program-related information leading to the development of appropriate, evidence-based curricula for Innu and Inuit education students. The research will encompass the fields of education, social, historical and political studies. The Research Associate will lead the development of proposals seeking external funding to support program development. Duties include undertaking literature reviews; consulting with academic and support staff at Memorial as well as other universities, including the Special Advisor to the President for Aboriginal Affairs, educators in the communities, community leaders and elders, and governmental authorities; and undertaking program-related research in the field of Aboriginal and rural education as well as the research into the social, historical, and political context of delivering education in Aboriginal communities. In addition to research, the Research Associate will assist with the evaluation, interpretation and planning necessary for community-based education programs. He or she will build on existing relationships with key stakeholders and work cooperatively with these stakeholders as the program is developed and delivered. The Research Associate will work with other organizations and agencies to identify potential students for the program.</p>

<p>We are inviting students from other Universities to take this course, which runs from approximately June 18 &#8211; July 31, 2013, through a Letter of Permission.  The course introduces students to contemporary northern Canada while experiencing the Northwest Territories.</p>
<p>We ask that you circulate the attached information sheet to relevant course instructors and/or programs so that interested students are made aware of this opportunity.  Along with tuition, the projected cost of the Field Course will be approximately $5,000.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Studies (ACUNS) is pleased to announce the launch of the <strong>Application and Nomination process for the Weston Family Prize for Lifetime Achievement in Northern Research: 2013 Competition</strong></p>
<p>Nominations for the prize will be accepted from November 28, 2012 to January 31st, 2013. Details of the nomination process can be found <a href="http://acuns.ca/website/awards/awards-2/applications/lifetime-achievement/" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>
<p>The successful candidate must have demonstrated leadership, inspiration, and mentorship in research in the Canadian north, and must be presently active in and demonstrate a sustained program of northern scientific research. An esteemed panel of peer researchers will select the recipient and the President of ACUNS will Chair the Adjudication Committee.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Against the backdrop of a new survey that reveals an overwhelming majority (94 percent) of Canadians agree that students should learn more about Canada’s arctic resources and the role of northern science, <a href="http://www.westonfoundation.org/Pages/default.aspx">The W. Garfield Weston Foundation</a> has announced that Dr. Louis Fortier has been awarded the $50,000 <em>Weston Family Prize for Lifetime Achievement in Northern Research</em> for his work focused on the impacts of climate change on the Arctic.</p>
<p>Trained at Laval and McGill Universities and a NATO postdoctoral fellow, Dr. Fortier holds the Canada Research Chair on the Response of Arctic Marine Ecosystems to Climate Change at Université Laval. A specialist of zooplankton and fish, he has authored and co-authored over 90 scientific papers on subjects varying from carbon fluxes in the Arctic Ocean to policy in a changing Arctic. He headed the Regroupement stratégique Québec-Océan (formerly GIROQ) from 1996 to 2005. An indefatigable promoter of a multidisciplinary and cross-sector approach to the ecosystem-level concerns raised by the warming of the Arctic, Dr. Fortier has led the NOW (International North Water Polynya Study) and CASES (Canadian Arctic Shelf Exchange Study) NSERC Research Networks. He is the Project Leader for the CFI-funded Canadian Research Icebreaker <em>Amundsen</em>, and the Scientific Director of ArcticNet, a Canadian Network of Centres of Excellence that brings together specialists from 30 universities for the integrated study of the transformation of the coastal Canadian Arctic.
